The colo-rectal service at the Royal Preston Hospital has an exciting unique opportunity for registered nurses who have an interest in nutrition and surgery to join the dynamic surgical team on a combined nutrition & colorectal surgery, 18 month rotational post. At the end of the rotation this will provide you with the knowledge & skills to become a permanent member of the surgical team.

We can provide a stimulating and fully supportive environment in an award winning nutritional service where you can further develop and actively contribute to the development of the delivery of a high standard of patient care.

Our Acute Colorectal Surgical ward has 32 beds. It is a fast-paced, challenging but very rewarding environment, where as a Team we are committed in providing the highest standards of care and pride ourselves in supporting all our staff, to learn and develop. This is achieved by a dedicated nursing team and two nursing educators working on the ward with staff. The ward is supported by a team clinical nurse specialists and seven colorectal surgeons

You will gain experience working on our emergency/elective admissions ward and have the opportunity to work with the specialist nurses and in the nurse led nutritional clinic.

We work collaboratively with other disciplines, including the nutrition team, therapists, specialist nurses, pain and palliative specialists. This aims to provide you with excellent opportunities for career development by enhancing your knowledge and skills.

As part of the wider Cancer Centre at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, we are excited about advancing our treatment options with the arrival of the new state of the art cancer surgery robot, which is enhancing patient outcomes and providing us with the opportunities to develop new skills and techniques.

We also have a strong track record in education; you will gain experience and competencies in enteral feeding devices including PEG, Naso-Gastric Tubes and Nasal Bridles, management of central lines, Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) and stoma management and the care of colo-rectal patient’s pre & post-surgical intervention. For new staff we offer a 6 week supernumerary period with support from the clinical educators and those new to the Trust, a program is tailored to individual needs.

As a Teaching Hospital we are committed to your continuous personal and professional development, so it will come as no surprise for you to hear that we offer a wide range of clinical and non-clinical development opportunities ranging from time management to interview skills. We are keen to provide all our staff with the opportunity to learn, which means some of our courses are provided via online learning through our own dedicated Trust site, so staff can develop knowledge as and when they want or need to.
