An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Trust, which was awarded NHS Foundation Trust status with effect from 1 April 2005. It is one of the largest providers of healthcare in the area offering new ‘state of the art’ facilities and has a complement of over 1100 beds for a local population of 390,000 and a regional population of 1.5 million.
This is a substantive consultant appointment, to support the Lancashire Chest Centre’s (LCC) regional severe asthma service. The LCC offers tertiary services in several subspecialties of Respiratory Medicine. You will join a thriving and fully integrated Medicine Directorate comprising of 37 consultants, including 10 Respiratory consultants across the two hospital sites.
You will be expected to support and assume leadership roles for our tertiary severe asthma and complex breathlessness service, as well as provide acute care for respiratory in-patients. The appointee will work as part of a large specialist MDT. The Severe asthma service links to the centres in Manchester and Mersey via the North West Severe Asthma Network which supports clinical delivery, education and research for the regional centres. There is an evolving university supported respiratory research strategy for Lancashire and South Cumbria and the appointee will have dedicated time to support research interests.
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trusts is one of the major acute Trusts in the North West with all of the usual specialties on site as well as being a Tertiary Centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria in the departments of Respiratory medicine, Neurosciences, Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Burns, Renal Medicine, Vascular surgery and Trauma medicine. Undergraduate medical education forms a core part of the Trust’s educational roles, which the appointee will be expected to be involved in.
Lancashire is an attractive area to live and has many facilities available locally. The cities of Manchester and Liverpool are within easy reach. Recreational facilities are many and varied, with the Lake District, Ribble Valley, Yorkshire Dales and Fylde Coast nearby.
Any person who is unable to work full-time for personal reasons will be eligible to be considered for the post and if appointed the job plan will be discussed on a personal basis in discussion with colleagues.

If you are successful in obtaining a position with our Trust which involves working with patients, you will be required to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) Check. As a registered body with the DBS, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will conduct the administration of this application on your behalf and the cost will be recovered from your salary, either as a one-off payment or over 3 months. Currently the charges made by the Disclosure and Barring Service for an Enhanced DBS check is £48.20.
