An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Trust as a Locum Consultant in Gastroenterology.

We were awarded NHS Foundation Trust status with effect from 1 April 2005. It is one of the largest providers of healthcare in the area offering new ‘state of the art’ facilities and has a complement of over 1100 beds for a local population of 390,000 and a regional population of 1.5 million.

You will join a thriving and fully integrated Medicine Directorate comprising of 39 consultants. The Medical Directorate is engaged in a comprehensive program of service improvement and we will see significant changes to the way we deliver our services. The scale and the pace of these changes provide an excellent opportunity for someone wishing to develop their career and gain experience in an expanding, progressive department.

The post holder will be part of a team of seven Gastroenterology consultants, supported by 6 Middle Grade doctors, and other junior doctors. The service receives excellent support from the pathology and radiology departments and from the emergency surgical services based at the hospital. We have specialist services in Nutrition, Viral Hepatitis and IBD. A Fibroscanner is also available with standard and XL probes. We have an established GI Physiology Service with High Resolution Manometry and Impedance/pH capabilities and a full range of lower GI testing and interventional modalities including Biofeedback. Open access endoscopy services, straight to test fast track endoscopy, ERCP, EUS and Urea breath testing services are also well established.

Preston is the Specialist centre for Upper GI Oesophago-gastric cancer within the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network.

The Gastroenterology Service has a well-established team of clinical nurse specialists specialising in:

- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (two posts);
- Hepatitis (two posts); and
- Alcohol Liaison (three posts).

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust forms one of the major acute Trusts in the North West with all of the usual specialties on site as well as being a Tertiary Centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria in the departments of Neurosciences, Oncology, Plastic Surgery and Burns and Renal Medicine. Undergraduate medical student teaching commenced in 2003 and the Trust has active with Universities of Manchester and Central Lancashire. Considerable opportunities exist for research and development, which are integral to teaching hospital status.
