Job overview

Enthusiastic, motivated, committed, just some of the words used to describe the nurses who thrive in our busy emergency environment.  We can promise you it won’t be dull! Every day is a learning day with 12 hour shifts our norm, the feedback we get from our fab team is that they really value them and the work life balance it brings.

There isn’t much we haven’t encountered, but as with everything we do, we do it as a team – dealing with things head on, supporting each other & changing lives.

We have two amazing Emergency Departments, Preston & Chorley, yet one amazing #TeamED vision – it’s exciting as staff will flex across both locations, learning loads of new skills along the way.

Whether you are bringing past ED experience or wanting to gain experience of working in a busy ED department, we really do want to hear from you.

Your passion for emergency care and trauma coupled with your great team ethic will fit right in and we want your valuable nursing experiences to enhance our team

Main duties of the job

We asked people why they love working on ED and one of the biggest reasons was that our team are like a family – we all spend a lot of time at work, so it’s great to know this is how our team feel and it’s definitely our biggest strength.

We deal with everything and anything so the opportunities for you to enhance your nursing skills, knowledge and experience is endless. We really value the personal skills, experience & qualities that every member of our team bring to us, creating our diverse, knowledgeable and very supportive team who feel motivated and able to influence the future direction of our service.

We have a variety of departmental study days such as:

  • Triage process
  • Minor injury assessment & management
  • Resus training
  • Access to CPD funding at University level
  • Acute paediatric care – for the Preston site
  • Major trauma training
  • Insitu- sims – taking place on the shop floor

and much more

…so there is always something new to learn and get involved in!

Working for our organisation

It’s all about #TeamED here - we are so proud of this! Share our world by contacting our Matron Lynne Sime to arrange to attend a Virtual Q&A session to find out more: lynn.sime@lthtr.nhs.uk

We’ve a new Instagram page: TeamED@LTHTR as well as Twitter: @LTHTREmergency1, see staff share their experience of working in a busy major trauma centre.

You’ll work alongside Advanced Nurse Clinicians, Emergency Nurse Practitioners, Consultants, Trauma Technicians and Senior Healthcare Assistants who support us all the way.  On starting you’re assigned a mentor to work alongside you for the first couple of weeks - we get lots of positive feedback about this.

124,000 patients come through our doors yearly, 18,000 of these are children & 700 are major trauma patients as our Preston site is the Regional Major Trauma Centre for the North West. The very distinctive Air Ambulance helicopter can be seen flying in & out of Preston a few times a day – bringing people from across the region to be treated.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are a forward thinking department with a real emphasis on staff development and training – we have our own clinical educator, based at the Preston site who delivers up to date training across both sites for all your learning needs.  Our Consultants and Senior Medical staff are on shift 24/7 and are always happy to offer support and education – the relationship between our medical and nursing staff is second to none.

It’s impossible to cram everything in just one advert, so we really welcome you to get in touch and have a chat with us to find out a lot more about joining us.

There is our dedicated section of the website where you can get into real detail about us and what we do: https://www.lancsteachinghospitals.nhs.uk/emergency-department/

You can follow us on Twitter – it’s where you will start to see the real ED as we share the stories of our world here @LTHTREmergency1
