An exciting opportunity has arisen for an  enthusiastic, skilled doctors to join our Cardiology Firm at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LTHTR) serving a local population of 390,000. 

This is a substantive post and the successful applicant will work closely as part of a dynamic cardiology team within the Trust as a Cardiology Specialty Doctor. The role will be to provide support in the delivery of invasive and non-Invasive Cardiology practices at Chorley and South District Hospital. The post will be linked to our Chorley site but cross cover for the team may be required on occasions at Royal Preston Hospital

The post holder will be given the opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of Cardiology with encouragement for personal and professional development over a three year plan of development

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the major acute Trusts in the North West with all of the usual specialties on site but is also a Tertiary Centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria in the Departments of Neurosciences, Nephrology, Oncology, Plastic Surgery and Burns; these services are provided across two sites.

The Cardiac Physiology Department offers a full range of investigations on both sites. Including transthoracic, trans-oesophageal echocardiography, autonomic function and tilt table testing. The department also runs Rapid Access Chest Pain, Heart Failure and Direct Access clinics for GP’s for Echocardiography and Holter Monitoring. The post holder will be linking with these clinics and the Heart Failure and Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse Specialist Team.

There is a newly refurbished Catheterisation Suite which predominantly undertakes diagnostic angiography, a range of permanent pacing/devices, loop implantation/explanation, internal and external cardioversion and a range of other studies. Our services link locally within both primary and tertiary care. Coronary intervention is currently performed by our Consultant Cardiologists at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. 

Training in various aspects of cardiology will be provided to the selected individuals. The post holders will have involvement in Cardiology out-patient clinics, in-patient care of cardiac patients in Coronary Care Unit and step down beds. The post holder will be participating in the various non-invasive and invasive cardiac procedures of the team including coronary angiography, permanent pacemaker implantation along with trans-oesophageal echocardiography. 

The hospital complies with the European Working Time Directive and offers an excellent Postgraduate Medical Centre and library. The post holder will be part of the Cardiology Firm and will assist in the training and development of other members of staff within the role, as required.

The Foundation Trust was formed in 2002 and is one of the largest NHS providers in the region employing over 5,300 staff. The hospital is ideally located next to major motorway networks and access to Manchester, Liverpool, Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District is less than 1 hour away.

Applications are invited from doctors with at least 4 years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least 2 of which will be in a specialty training programme or as a Fixed Term Specialty Trainee in a relevant specialty.
